Most of Buffalo went up before the Second World War. That is the whole reason cabinet refinishing makes more sense here than it does in a subdivision built in 2015. The cabinetry in a Parkside four square or a North Buffalo bungalow was built out of solid stock by people who assumed it would outlive them. It usually has.
What has not lasted is the finish on it. Layer of varnish, layer of oil paint, then whatever the last owner rolled on in 1998. Add fifty years of cooking and you get surfaces that look dead no matter how hard you scrub them. That is a coating problem, not a cabinet problem, and coatings can be replaced.
There is a second Buffalo specific reason to refinish rather than replace. A lot of this housing stock is doubles and upper lower flats. If you own one and you are turning over a unit, gutting the kitchen means weeks of lost rent and a five figure invoice. Refinishing gets the kitchen looking new in under a week for a fraction of it.

Pre war cabinetry with the factory varnish still on it, gone amber and sticky. Beautiful stock underneath. Strip it, spray it, and the grain comes back instead of disappearing under another coat of paint.
The Nineties Golden Oak
The remodel everyone did between 1988 and 2003. Structurally perfect, visually dated, orange under any light. This is the single most common kitchen we are called out to, and the one where the before and after is most dramatic.

Upper or lower flat, tenant just moved out, kitchen looks tired but nothing is actually broken. Refinishing gets it rent ready in days instead of the month a gut would take, and the unit shows better.

Most kitchens land between $3,500 and $8,000. Size and existing condition drive it more than anything else. Replacing the same cabinetry usually runs $10,000 to $25,000, and older Buffalo kitchens push the high end of that because the boxes often have to be custom built to fit openings that are not standard. Depends on the wood and what you want the room to feel like. Old growth stock with real grain is worth showing, and a clear or tinted finish brings it back without hiding it. If the wood underneath is plain, mismatched, or has been patched over the years, paint gives a cleaner result. We will tell you which one your cabinets actually are at the estimate rather than pushing you toward one.
Yes, and it is a common reason we get called in Buffalo. A typical kitchen is done in 5 to 6 days, which fits inside a normal turnover window. Compared to a gut renovation you are looking at a fraction of the cost and weeks less vacancy, and the unit shows considerably better.
Most kitchens are complete in 5 to 6 days. Because the doors and drawer fronts leave for the shop, you keep your counters and appliances for most of the project. Cabinets are ready for normal use within 24 to 48 hours of the final coat. The Renner 765 2K system hardens far faster than off the shelf enamels, so you are not waiting a month to have your kitchen back. Go easy on shelf liner and heavy stacking for the first week.
Far less than people expect. The bulk of the spraying happens at our shop, not in your kitchen, and we run air scrubbers and filters while working on site. It matters more in a closed up Buffalo house in February than in July, and we plan around that.
We spray Renner 765, an Italian made professional grade 2K waterborne coating catalyzed with 404 hardener, through an HVLP system. It cures to a hard, chemical resistant surface built to take daily kitchen use for years. With normal care and no harsh cleaners it outlasts anything brushed or rolled on by a wide margin.
